Collection, 1862-1996. 1862-1996.

A collection of materials related to Thomas Savage and other Savage family members. The materials include biographical information about Thomas Savage, his brother John, and his cousin William; a copy of the booklet The diary of an unknown soldier, edited by Elsa Vaught; copies of letters written by Thomas to family members at home during his service; a copy of a letter from Jack L. Hodson written in 1915 to John Savage; and correspondence to and from Alfred Savage regarding evidence that Thomas Savage was the author of the diary. The diary entries date from September 5, 1862 to December 7, 1862 and offer many details regarding the activities of and conditions facing Savage's company. The Iowa 19th Infantry was involved in the Battle of Prairie Grove in December of 1862 so it is presumed that the diary was found on that battlefield.
